All five areas

When spreadsheets and off-the-shelf software stop fitting.

Most businesses do not outgrow their software all at once. It happens gradually, and the signs are familiar long before anyone calls it a problem.

The software is still in use, and so are the workarounds.

Again, not all of these. Two of them is usually enough to be worth a conversation.

  • There are more spreadsheets than anyone can name, and some of them matter.
  • An important process lives mostly in one person's head.
  • Staff have quiet workarounds for the software they were given.
  • The same information exists in three places and disagrees in at least one.
  • The tool technically supports the task, but only through steps nobody would design.
  • Customers or staff need one focused place to do a thing, and there isn't one.

Custom software is not automatically the better answer.

It is more to build, more to look after and more to get wrong. Often the right move is to connect the systems you already have, or to use more of what you already pay for. We will say so when that is the case, and it costs you less than the alternative.

Building something new is worth it when the process is genuinely yours, and the software you can buy is built for a different business.

One focused place where the work actually happens.

  • Internal applications

The screen your team works in all day, built around the process they actually follow.

  • Portals

A place for customers, suppliers or staff to do one thing without an email thread.

  • Operational systems

Jobs, records, approvals and status in one place instead of four.

  • Workflow interfaces

A front end for an automated process, so people can see it and step in.

Custom application development:

  1. Your process
  2. Application
  3. People and record

Built around how your team already works.

An application that forces a new way of working gets abandoned, and the spreadsheets come back. We start from what people do now, keep the parts that work, and only change what is causing the trouble.

The application we run our own business on: quotations, invoices and customers in one place, built around how we work. Shown in a controlled test environment with an invented customer. See how a quotation is made in it

This page is about work that has outgrown its tools. If one clear, repetitive workflow is the problem, workflow automation is usually enough. Workflow automation → How we tell a system from an automation →

Usually there is one process everybody complains about. That is the one to describe.
